The African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate for Abakaliki North State Constituency in the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Arc. Joseph Ogbaga, has called on Nigerians to remain committed to defending democratic values and protecting the sanctity of the ballot as the nation marks the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
Ogbaga made the call in a statement issued on Friday, saying Democracy Day provides an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices of pro-democracy advocates and the collective responsibility of citizens in sustaining democratic governance.
According to him, democracy can only flourish when citizens actively participate in governance and remain vigilant in safeguarding their votes and holding elected officials accountable.

“Democracy is not only about casting ballots during elections; it is about ensuring that those votes are protected and that the will of the people is reflected in governance,” he said.
The ADC candidate stressed that credible elections remain the bedrock of national development and democratic stability, noting that every vote must count to strengthen public confidence in the electoral process.
He urged Nigerians to deepen their engagement in governance beyond election periods by monitoring government activities, demanding accountability, and participating in community affairs.
Ogbaga also emphasized the need for purposeful representation at all levels of government, stating that the people of Abakaliki North deserve leadership that prioritises their welfare and development needs.
He identified key areas requiring attention to include education, youth empowerment, healthcare delivery, and rural infrastructure, adding that effective representation should be focused on addressing the concerns of the people.
The ADC standard-bearer further encouraged constituents to take active interest in governance by engaging elected representatives and contributing to decision-making processes within their communities.
“The strength of democracy lies in the people. When citizens are informed, united, and active, it becomes difficult for democracy to be undermined,” he stated.
Ogbaga pledged that if elected into the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, he would institutionalise regular town hall meetings across the seven wards of Abakaliki North Constituency to promote transparency, accountability, and grassroots participation in governance.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to advancing youth and women empowerment programmes and sponsoring legislative initiatives aimed at expanding economic opportunities and improving living standards within the constituency.
While congratulating Nigerians on the occasion of Democracy Day, Ogbaga called on citizens across the country to remain steadfast in defending democratic principles, describing active participation and vigilance as essential ingredients for national progress and sustainable development.
