In Nigeria’s fast-growing digital entertainment space, few stories are as inspiring as that of Nuel Iyke, the talented comedian, actor, and content creator whose videos featuring his beloved grandmother have captured the hearts of millions. While many people assume his success happened overnight, the reality is a story of perseverance, sacrifice, and years of relentless hard work.

Born and raised in Umuahia, Nuel’s childhood was marked by tragedy. He lost his father in 2009 and later lost his mother in 2016, leaving him and his younger brother to navigate life with limited support. As the first child in the family, he carried enormous responsibilities at a young age.

Despite the challenges, Nuel never abandoned his passion for entertainment. Even as a boy, he was known in his neighborhood for organizing children to participate in drama rehearsals and church plays. His younger brother often served as the cameraman, recording the performances. Unknown to many, those simple childhood productions were laying the foundation for a future career in content creation.

Education was not a smooth journey. After three unsuccessful attempts at gaining admission through JAMB, Nuel refused to give up. He enrolled for a diploma programme in Computer Science before eventually securing admission through Direct Entry to study Home Science at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike.

Graduating from school did not immediately translate into financial stability. With no wealthy relatives to rely on and an elderly grandmother depending on him, Nuel had to work hard to survive. He took up employment at The Choice Fast Food in Umuahia, where he gained practical experience in food preparation and hospitality.

His culinary journey later took him to Warri, where he worked as a private chef. This aspect of his life explains why cooking features naturally in many of his videos today. Unlike creators who merely perform for the camera, Nuel possesses genuine culinary skills acquired through professional experience.

While working as a chef, he began experimenting with content creation on TikTok. At the time, he was reportedly staying in his employer’s family home and creating videos whenever he found spare time. Success did not come immediately. He posted consistently despite receiving modest engagement.

Then came a breakthrough.

In 2022, one of his videos attracted about 80,000 views, giving him confidence that larger opportunities were possible. The following year proved transformative when a comedy skit inspired by the hit song “Johnny” by Yemi Alade went viral. The video dramatically increased his visibility and helped him gain hundreds of thousands of followers.

As his audience expanded, TikTok Live sessions began generating income that exceeded his monthly chef salary of about ₦50,000. Recognizing the opportunity, Nuel made a bold decision in 2023—he relocated to Lagos to pursue content creation full-time.

The gamble paid off.

Today, Nuel commands an audience of more than one million followers across social media platforms. His unique ability to combine comedy, storytelling, cooking, and family-centered content has made him a favorite among viewers. Major brands, including itel-life.com and tecno-mobile.com, have partnered with him, transforming his online presence into a thriving business.

At the center of his success story remains his grandmother, affectionately called “Queen Mother” by fans. She stood by him during his darkest moments, offering emotional support and even helping finance trips to auditions when resources were scarce. Today, her appearances in his videos have become one of the defining features of his brand.

Nuel Iyke’s story is more than a tale of internet fame. It is a powerful reminder that resilience, consistency, and belief in one’s dreams can overcome even the toughest circumstances. From an orphaned young man struggling to make ends meet to a celebrated digital influencer inspiring millions, his journey proves that success often belongs to those who refuse to quit.
