Residents of a community in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State were left shocked and saddened after a woman was reportedly apprehended for allegedly abandoning her five-year-old child following advice she received from a self-proclaimed seer.
According to eyewitness accounts, the heartbreaking incident unfolded after the child, said to have been struggling to walk, became the subject of concern for the mother. Rather than seeking medical attention or professional help, the woman allegedly turned to a self-styled spiritual adviser in Benin City for guidance.

Reports indicate that the seer allegedly instructed the woman to throw the child into a river, claiming it was the solution to the child’s condition. Acting on the alleged advice, the woman reportedly took the child away before concerned residents intervened.
Community members, alarmed by the situation and determined to protect the vulnerable child, reportedly rescued the youngster before any harm could occur. The woman was subsequently apprehended and handed over to relevant authorities for further investigation.
The child, described by residents as innocent and helpless, has since become the focus of sympathy and concern within the community. Many residents expressed sadness that a young child could face such danger because of superstition and misinformation.
The incident has reignited calls for parents and guardians to seek proper medical care and professional support for children with health challenges, while authorities continue efforts to curb the activities of individuals who exploit vulnerable families through false spiritual claims.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
