Bayelsa State on Monday entered the commercial aviation space as Pioneer Airlines commenced non-scheduled flight operations with one of the aircraft acquired by the state government, marking a significant step in efforts to diversify the state’s economy and boost internally generated revenue.
The inaugural flight, operated with an ATR 72-600 aircraft under a partnership arrangement with Pioneer Airlines, departed the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at about 11:10 a.m. after receiving clearance from the control tower.

The aircraft, piloted by Captain M. Ibrahim alongside First Officer Joyce, a female co-pilot, successfully completed the journey to the Bayelsa International Airport in one hour and five minutes, landing at approximately 12:15 p.m.
On board the historic flight was the Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, who occupied Seat 1A as the symbolic first passenger of the airline’s commercial journey.
Also accompanying the governor were former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Gabriel Onyenwife, the Governor’s Special Adviser on Political Matters I, High Chief Collins Cocodia, and five other aides.
The commencement of operations by Pioneer Airlines represents Bayelsa’s latest investment in aviation infrastructure and transport services, with the state government expressing optimism that the initiative would open up new economic opportunities and strengthen its revenue base.
Speaking after the flight experience, Governor Diri expressed satisfaction with the airline’s performance and confidence in its ability to deliver efficient and quality services.
He also voiced optimism about the partnership between the Bayelsa State Government and Pioneer Airlines, describing it as one with strong prospects for growth and long-term benefits.
The maiden flight is widely seen as a milestone in Bayelsa’s aviation ambitions and a practical move toward positioning the state as an emerging player in regional air transport services.
The partnership with Pioneer Airlines is expected to provide improved connectivity while supporting economic activities and investment opportunities within and beyond the state.
The Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, in a statement issued on Monday, described the development as another reflection of Governor Diri’s commitment to transforming Bayelsa and changing the narrative through strategic initiatives.
With the successful takeoff and landing of the inaugural flight, Bayelsa has now formally begun its journey into commercial aviation, signaling what stakeholders hope will become a sustainable and rewarding sector for the state’s economy.
