What could have turned into another tragic day in Nigeria’s aviation history instead ended with tears of relief and heartfelt gratitude after all 68 passengers aboard an Enugu Air flight survived a runway incident at Benin Airport on Thursday.
The aircraft, with registration number 5N-ENR, was operating the Enugu–Benin–Lagos route when it reportedly overshot the runway after landing and veered into a nearby bush. Emergency responders from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) quickly rushed to the scene, safely evacuating all passengers and crew members. No injuries or fatalities were reported.
For families waiting at the airport and loved ones following the news, the incident was a frightening reminder of how quickly an ordinary journey can turn into a life-threatening situation. Moments of panic gave way to overwhelming relief as confirmation emerged that everyone on board had walked away safely.
Enugu Air has since confirmed the runway excursion, stating that the aircraft has been secured and the relevant aviation authorities have been notified to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. The airline also warned that some flight schedules may be temporarily adjusted while assessments continue.
The cause of the runway excursion has not yet been officially determined. Aviation authorities are expected to conduct a full investigation to establish what happened.
For many Nigerians, the greatest headline is not that a plane left the runway, but that 68 passengers and the crew were given another chance at life—a moment many are already describing as nothing short of a miracle.
