The Honourable Minister for Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, has congratulated the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on its 53rd anniversary, describing the scheme as a critical platform for promoting national unity, youth empowerment, and sustainable development in Nigeria.

Speaking during the anniversary celebration in Abuja on Friday, Olawande commended the NYSC for its longstanding role in bridging ethnic, religious, and cultural divides among Nigerian youths.

According to him, the NYSC has, over the past five decades, continued to mould responsible and development-oriented citizens committed to national progress.

“The NYSC has continued to unite young Nigerians across ethnic, religious, and cultural divides, fostering friendship, understanding, and national cohesion,” Olawande said.

He described the scheme as a powerful representation of sacrifice, resilience, patriotism, and national integration, stressing that its impact on the country’s social and developmental landscape remains significant.

The Minister also reflected on the symbolic importance of the NYSC khaki uniform, saying it represents more than a dress code but rather embodies dedication to community service and loyalty to the ideals of nation-building.

Olawande applauded the leadership and management of the NYSC for preserving the vision and objectives of the scheme despite emerging national challenges and changing social realities.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Federal Government to strengthening youth-focused programmes and supporting initiatives designed to empower young people and deepen national unity.

The anniversary celebration drew senior NYSC officials, management staff, serving and former corps members, alongside stakeholders from various sectors, who gathered to celebrate the achievements and enduring legacy of the scheme.

Participants at the event highlighted the NYSC’s contributions to cultural exchange, grassroots development, and the promotion of patriotism among Nigerian youths. They also called for sustained support and reforms aimed at improving the operations and relevance of the programme.

Established in 1973, the NYSC remains one of Nigeria’s foremost institutions for youth engagement and national integration, deploying graduates across states to contribute to community development and strengthen bonds of unity among citizens.
