The need to strengthen sports education and build long-term capacity in schools formed the focus of a one-day workshop organized for teachers and coaches in Bayelsa State.
The workshop, organized on Wednesday by the Bayelsa State Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Nigeria School Sport Federation (NSSF) and the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), was held at the Conference Hall of Education House, Ovom, Yenagoa.
The inaugural edition, themed “Building Capacity for Long-Term Growth in Primary and Secondary Schools,” brought together teachers and grassroots coaches to enhance their skills in sports education and athlete development.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Education, Hon. Gentle Emelah, urged participants to maximize the opportunity offered by the training. Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Simon Okene, Emelah stressed the importance of teachers and coaches equipping themselves with the necessary knowledge to effectively and professionally guide students and athletes.
He noted that although the students and athletes may not be their biological children, helping them achieve success at national and international levels remains a rewarding accomplishment.
According to him, the Bayelsa State Governor is passionate about both sports and education and understands their significance in youth development.
“Sometimes invitations for competitions come late, but the Commissioner ensures funds are raised for students and athletes to participate, especially in sports where Bayelsa has excelled, such as basketball, with plans to extend support to other sporting activities,” he said.
President of the Nigeria School Sport Federation, Mrs. Joseph Olabisi, described education as the foundation of national development and emphasized that school sports remain central to sustainable sports growth.
She said athletes cannot reach the Olympic podium without first being discovered by teachers and grassroots coaches, highlighting their critical role in talent identification and development.
Also speaking, President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Mr. Habu Gumel, represented by NOC Board Member Mrs. Kemi Obidan, said the programme was designed to promote respect, friendship, excellence, discipline, and unity among young people through sports.
