Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has described the conduct of the All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Representatives primaries across the state as peaceful, calm and successful.
Speaking with journalists shortly after monitoring the exercise on Friday, Governor Nwifuru said reports from the six federal constituencies in the state showed that the primaries were conducted without rancour or violence.
According to the governor, party stakeholders and leaders played significant roles in ensuring a smooth process across the state.
He noted that the APC was consolidating on its earlier consensus arrangements, which he said contributed to the peaceful outcome of the exercise.
Reacting to concerns over some party members allegedly working against the consensus arrangements, Nwifuru maintained that their actions remained within democratic principles.
He explained that some aspirants who resigned from political appointments to pursue elective offices were acting based on personal convictions and should not be condemned for exercising their democratic rights.
The governor stressed that resignation from office did not amount to incompetence, adding that democracy thrives when people are free to pursue their ambitions and offer opposition where necessary.
“We accepted their resignation and wished them well. Our happiness is that the outing today went as planned and expected. It was very peaceful and calm,” he stated.
Governor Nwifuru also called on members of the ruling party to actively participate in the remaining primaries scheduled for next week.
The APC primaries in Ebonyi are part of preparations by the party ahead of forthcoming electoral activities, with party leaders expressing optimism over continued unity within its ranks.
The statement was issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Dr. Monday Uzor.
