Nigeria’s aviation sector recorded another milestone on Wednesday as Bayelsa State-owned Pioneer Airline received its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), clearing the carrier for the commencement of commercial flight operations.
The presentation of the certificate marked the official entry of the airline into Nigeria’s growing domestic aviation market.
Following the ceremony, the management team of the airline, led by its Managing Director, Capt. Ungbuku, paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, to formally present the AOC.
Speaking during the visit, Keyamo described the development as a positive sign for Nigeria’s aviation industry, noting that the increasing number of state-owned airlines was a direct outcome of reforms and policies introduced under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to the minister, the Federal Government’s aviation policies have created a more enabling environment for investors and state governments to participate actively in the sector.
“Yesterday, the Bayelsa State-owned airline named Pioneer Airline was presented its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) by the regulator, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), signalling the beginning of its commercial operations,” Keyamo wrote on his Facebook page.
He added that the emergence of more airlines in the country would provide Nigerians with wider travel options and help improve competition within the aviation industry.
“I remarked at the occasion that the rise in State-owned airlines is as a result of excellent aviation policies put in place by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and that we should look out for more of such in the immediate future.
This would significantly assist air travellers to have more choices of airlines with which they can travel,” he stated.
Industry observers say the entry of Pioneer Airline is expected to boost connectivity in the Niger Delta region and contribute to economic growth, tourism and investment opportunities in Bayelsa State and beyond.
The NCAA issues Air Operator Certificates only after airlines meet strict operational, safety and technical requirements, making the certification a critical step before commercial flight services can begin.
