As political tension continues to build ahead of the Osun State governorship election, Nigerian music star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has added his voice to growing calls for a peaceful and credible electoral process.
For many residents, elections are more than political contests. They are moments that determine who controls public resources, shapes policies and governs communities. But they can also become periods of anxiety when political rivalry begins to threaten peace and public safety.
It is against this backdrop that Davido, in a post on his verified X account, appealed to United States President Donald Trump and the international community to pay close attention to developments surrounding the Osun election.
His intervention has drawn attention not simply because he is one of Nigeria’s biggest entertainers, but because it reflects a wider concern about the need to protect the democratic rights of ordinary voters.
Behind every polling unit in Osun are people with families, businesses, jobs and aspirations. They are voters who want to walk to their polling stations, cast their ballots and return home safely. They do not want political disagreements to turn into violence or intimidation.
Davido’s message centred on that basic expectation: peace, transparency and respect for the will of the people.
His appeal also highlights the importance of election monitoring. Where citizens fear violence or manipulation, confidence in the electoral process can quickly disappear. Effective monitoring by relevant institutions, civil society organisations and other stakeholders can help discourage abuses and reassure voters that their votes matter.
The responsibility, however, does not rest on international observers or public figures alone.
Political parties and their supporters must resist the temptation to treat elections as battles that must be won at all costs. Security agencies must remain professional and impartial, while electoral officials must ensure that the rules are applied fairly to all contestants.
For the people of Osun, the ultimate issue is simple. They want to choose their governor without fear.
The election should therefore not be remembered for violence, intimidation or political confrontation. It should be remembered as a demonstration of what democracy can offer when citizens are allowed to make their choices freely.
Davido’s appeal may have come from the entertainment world, but its message speaks directly to the streets and communities of Osun: politics should never cost the people their peace.
As the election approaches, the real test will be whether all stakeholders can turn that message into action and ensure that every voter has the freedom to participate and every legitimate vote is respected.
