The promise of a functional airport in Abia State has once again moved closer to reality following Governor Alex Otti’s announcement that the Federal Government has committed to releasing funds for the construction of the terminal section of the proposed Abia Airport in Nsulu.

The development, disclosed during a political gathering at the headquarters of Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area in Okpuala Ngwa, has generated renewed optimism among residents, investors and business stakeholders who view the airport project as a critical catalyst for economic growth and regional development.

For decades, Abia State has remained one of the few major commercial centres in Nigeria without a functional airport despite its strategic position as home to Aba, one of the country’s leading commercial cities. Successive administrations had proposed different approaches to addressing the challenge, but the dream remained largely unrealised.

Governor Otti’s latest disclosure therefore represents more than just another government announcement. To many residents, it signals a significant breakthrough in a project capable of reshaping the state’s economic future.

Speaking during the formal reception of political leader Ochiagha Reagan Ufomba and members of the Change Abia Organisation into the Labour Party, Otti said the anticipated Federal Government funding would accelerate work on the airport project and bring the vision closer to completion.

According to the governor, the airport occupies a central position in his administration’s long-term development agenda and is expected to create new opportunities for trade, investment and tourism.

He expressed confidence that the facility would become operational within the next few years, opening Abia to increased domestic and international business activities.

Economic analysts believe that airports serve as critical infrastructure for development, providing faster movement of people, goods and services while attracting investments to surrounding communities. In the case of Abia, experts say the proposed airport could unlock enormous economic potential by connecting the state more directly to national and global markets.

The choice of Nsulu in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area as the location of the airport has also drawn attention to the development prospects of the surrounding communities. Residents expect that improved infrastructure, increased commercial activities and employment opportunities will accompany the project.

Governor Otti has consistently maintained that infrastructure development remains one of the pillars of his administration’s agenda. Since assuming office, his government has focused on road rehabilitation, healthcare improvement, education reforms and efforts aimed at stimulating economic growth.

At the event, the governor reiterated that his administration inherited years of infrastructural decay and institutional challenges, which required deliberate and systematic interventions before embarking on large-scale development projects.

According to him, the state is gradually overcoming those challenges and entering a phase where more ambitious projects can be executed simultaneously.

Apart from the airport project, Otti highlighted several other strategic initiatives designed to transform the state’s economic landscape.

Among them is the planned reconstruction of the Ururuka Road, a critical route linking Umuahia and Aba without requiring motorists to travel through the busy Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway.

The road is expected to improve connectivity between the state’s two major urban centres, reduce travel time and facilitate commercial activities.

The governor also provided updates on the proposed Abia Medical City project, which is expected to position the state as a destination for quality healthcare services.

The initiative is designed to reduce medical tourism, create employment opportunities and attract healthcare investments into the state.

Observers note that the combination of aviation infrastructure, improved road networks and healthcare investments could significantly enhance Abia’s competitiveness within the South-East region.

Beyond infrastructure, the event also carried important political implications.

The reception of Ochiagha Reagan Ufomba and members of the Change Abia Organisation into the Labour Party was viewed as a major boost to the party’s growing influence in the state.

Political stakeholders described the development as evidence of increasing confidence in Governor Otti’s administration and the Labour Party’s leadership.

Welcoming the new members, the Abia State Chairman of the Labour Party, Dr Peter Azubuike, described Ufomba’s entry into the party as a significant addition to its political strength.

He noted that the party was pleased to receive the former political leader and his supporters, expressing confidence that their participation would contribute to strengthening the party’s structure ahead of future elections.

Several prominent figures who spoke at the event praised Governor Otti’s performance in office.

Among them were the member representing Isiala Ngwa North State Constituency, Chief Ugochukwu Iheonunekwu; the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Pastor Caleb Ajagba; and the Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, Chief Matthew Ekwuribe.

The speakers argued that the administration had transformed various sectors of the state within a relatively short period and earned the confidence of many residents through visible projects and reforms.

For many observers, however, the most significant endorsement came from Ochiagha Reagan Ufomba himself.

After receiving the Labour Party flag from Governor Otti, Ufomba explained that his decision to join the party was influenced by what he described as the governor’s remarkable achievements across different sectors.

He stated that the administration had restored public confidence in governance and demonstrated that effective leadership could deliver measurable results.

Particularly noteworthy was Ufomba’s endorsement of the proposed Abia Airport project.

According to him, the airport has the potential to transform Abia into a major centre for commerce, investment and regional connectivity.

He argued that improved air transportation would not only facilitate business operations but also create opportunities for industries, investors and entrepreneurs seeking access to broader markets.

His position reflects the views of many business operators in Aba and other parts of the state who believe that better transportation infrastructure is essential for sustaining economic growth.

As anticipation grows over the release of Federal Government funds, residents are hopeful that the project will maintain momentum and avoid the delays that have affected similar initiatives elsewhere.

For a state widely known for its entrepreneurial spirit, manufacturing activities and commercial potential, the successful completion of the airport could mark the beginning of a new chapter in its development journey.

If realised as envisioned, the Abia Airport project may become more than an aviation facility. It could emerge as a symbol of economic renewal, regional integration and the broader transformation agenda that Governor Otti’s administration seeks to achieve.

For now, all eyes remain on the next phase of implementation as Abians await the fulfilment of a project that many believe could redefine the state’s future.
