JOS – In a major effort to strengthen food security and support farmers across Plateau State, Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang has officially flagged off the distribution of certified high-quality seeds to farmers at no cost, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to agricultural development and economic growth.

The initiative, which targets farmers in all 17 local government areas of the state, is expected to enhance crop productivity, improve household incomes, and contribute significantly to food sufficiency.

Speaking during the flag-off ceremony in Jos, Governor Mutfwang announced that a total of 250 metric tonnes of certified seeds would be distributed through the Plateau Agricultural Development Programme (PADP) and the NG-CARES platform.

The seed varieties include rice (FARO 44, FARO 52, FARO 60 and FARO 66), maize (Sammaz and SC-Hybrid varieties), soyabean and wheat. According to the governor, the programme is designed to ensure that farmers have access to quality inputs capable of delivering higher yields during the current farming season.

“This exercise is a direct investment in our farmers, our food security, and our future,” Mutfwang stated.

He emphasized that agriculture remains a key pillar of his administration’s development agenda, noting that government interventions in the sector are aimed at creating sustainable livelihoods, reducing poverty, and strengthening the state’s economy.

The governor explained that the free distribution of certified seeds forms part of broader efforts to modernize agriculture and encourage increased participation in farming activities across Plateau State.

According to him, access to improved seeds is one of the most critical factors in boosting agricultural productivity, especially at a time when concerns over food insecurity continue to affect many parts of the country.

Governor Mutfwang urged farmers to take full advantage of the opportunity by planting the seeds promptly and applying good agricultural practices to maximize yields.

“Every farmer in Plateau State, these seeds are yours. Plant them with confidence. Your government stands with you,” he declared.

The governor also noted that the arrival of the rainy season presents an ideal opportunity for cultivation and called on residents to return to the farms in large numbers.

“The rains are here. This is the time to cultivate our land and increase food production. We must work together to make Plateau State a leading agricultural hub in Nigeria,” he said.

Observers say the intervention could provide a significant boost to local food production, especially as rising food prices continue to place pressure on households across the country.

Agricultural experts have long advocated the use of certified seeds, arguing that they offer better resistance to pests and diseases, improved adaptability to environmental conditions, and higher productivity compared to traditional seed varieties.

Many farmers who attended the event expressed optimism about the programme, describing it as timely and beneficial. They noted that the rising cost of farm inputs has made it increasingly difficult for smallholder farmers to operate profitably.

For many beneficiaries, the free seed distribution represents not only relief from financial burden but also renewed hope for a successful farming season.

The initiative further highlights the Mutfwang administration’s determination to reposition agriculture as a driver of economic growth, job creation and food security in Plateau State.

As planting activities commence across communities, expectations are high that the programme will translate into increased harvests, improved food availability and stronger rural economies.

With the free distribution of quality seeds now underway, farmers across Plateau State are preparing for what many hope will be one of the most productive farming seasons in recent years.
