FHerdsmen Allegedly Cut Off Teenage Girl’s Hand In Kaduna

A teenage girl has reportedly lost her hand following a brutal attack in a rural community in Kaduna State, after her family allegedly rejected a marriage proposal made by a herdsman, sparking outrage and renewed calls for improved security in the area.

According to residents, the incident occurred late last week in a village on the outskirts of Kaduna, when armed assailants believed to be herdsmen invaded the community at night. The attackers reportedly stormed the family’s home, assaulted members of the household and inflicted severe injuries on the teenage girl, including the amputation of her hand.

Community sources claim the attack was a reprisal after the girl’s family turned down a marriage proposal allegedly made by one of the attackers. Villagers said tensions had been simmering for weeks after the proposal was rejected, but no one anticipated the level of violence that followed.

The victim was said to have been rushed to a nearby hospital, where medical personnel battled to save her life. She is currently receiving treatment, while family members remain in shock over the incident.

A community leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity for security reasons, condemned the attack and described it as “barbaric and unacceptable.” He called on the government and security agencies to act swiftly to apprehend those responsible and prevent further violence.

“This is not just an attack on one family, but on the entire community,” he said. “Our people are living in fear, and justice must be served.”

The Kaduna State Police Command confirmed that it received a report of the incident and has commenced an investigation. A police spokesperson said efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest the perpetrators, urging residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies.

Human rights groups have also reacted, calling for a thorough investigation and adequate support for the victim. They stressed that no cultural, religious, or personal grievance can justify such violence.

The incident adds to growing concerns over insecurity and communal tensions in parts of Kaduna State, where clashes and attacks have continued to threaten lives and livelihoods. Residents are urging authorities to strengthen security presence in vulnerable communities to prevent further attacks.
