For nearly two weeks, social media users shared claims that Uchechi Okwu-Kanu, wife of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, had filed for divorce.
The reports quickly gained traction across blogs and social media platforms, leaving many Nigerians questioning the state of the Kanu family’s relationship.
However, on Friday, Uchechi Okwu-Kanu publicly dismissed the reports, describing them as false and misleading.
In a statement posted on her verified X (formerly Twitter) account, she said her attention had been drawn to the rumours and categorically denied initiating any divorce proceedings against her husband.
“For the avoidance of doubt, I have not filed for divorce. The publication is entirely false and should be treated as misinformation,” she stated.
She expressed disappointment that individuals continued to circulate fabricated stories about her family without verifying the facts, warning that such misinformation only fuels unnecessary speculation and public confusion.
The clarification comes after the divorce claim circulated widely online for about two weeks without any credible evidence or official court documents to support it.
Verdict: False ❌
There is no verified evidence that Uchechi Okwu-Kanu filed for divorce from Nnamdi Kanu. The person at the centre of the claim has publicly denied it, making the viral report false.
Why This Matters
False personal stories involving public figures often spread rapidly on social media, especially when they involve sensitive family matters. This case highlights the importance of verifying information through credible sources and official statements before sharing it.
