The death of 23-year-old pregnant woman G. Sushmita has shocked residents of Telangana, India, after allegations emerged that repeated abuse and accusations from her husband and mother-in-law pushed her into deep emotional distress.
Sushmita, who was five months pregnant, was found hanging in her home on June 25 in Gadipeddapur village, Medak district, just two days after her husband, G. Abhilash, allegedly demanded a DNA test to prove the paternity of their unborn child.
According to a complaint filed by her mother, G. Janabai, the request deeply humiliated Sushmita and cast doubt on her fidelity, leaving her emotionally devastated. The complaint also alleged that she had endured months of physical and emotional abuse during her 18-month marriage.
Family members said the DNA demand sparked an argument that eventually required intervention from community elders. However, they claimed the emotional damage had already been done, as Sushmita struggled to cope with the accusations and alleged mistreatment.
Two days later, she was found dead in what police suspect was suicide. Her mother believes the continuous harassment by her husband and mother-in-law drove her to take the tragic step.
Following the complaint, police arrested Abhilash and his mother, Laxmi. They have been remanded in judicial custody as investigations continue. Authorities have registered a case under Sections 85 (cruelty by husband or relatives), 108 (abetment of suicide), read with Section 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The allegations remain under investigation, and the accused have not been convicted of any offence.
