President Donald Trump has officially presented a newly refurbished Boeing 747 gifted by Qatar, describing the aircraft as a “flying White House” during a ceremony at Joint Base Andrews.

The luxury jet, reportedly worth hundreds of millions of dollars, has undergone extensive modifications to meet the requirements of presidential travel and security. It is expected to serve as a temporary addition to the Air Force One fleet while the United States waits for the delivery of next-generation presidential aircraft, a project that has faced repeated delays.

The donation has sparked widespread discussion in political and security circles, with critics raising concerns about the ethical, constitutional and national security implications of accepting such a valuable gift from a foreign government. Questions have also been raised about the cost and complexity of converting the aircraft into a secure presidential command center.

Inside, the aircraft boasts an upscale design featuring leather seats, plush carpets, elegant wood finishes and gold-toned décor. Beyond its luxurious appearance, the jet has been equipped with advanced communications technology and defensive systems needed to support presidential operations in the air.

Government officials say the aircraft is expected to play a prominent role in major national events, including the upcoming Independence Day celebrations on July 4, where it could take part in a ceremonial flyover.

The Qatari-donated jet will replace one of the aging Boeing 747 aircraft that has been used for presidential travel since the 1990s. Boeing’s long-delayed replacement programme has struggled with production setbacks, forcing the government to seek interim solutions.

Defending the decision, Trump said accepting the aircraft was a practical move given the delays affecting the delivery of new presidential jets. He also suggested that the aircraft could eventually be transferred to a presidential library after it is retired from service.

Officials maintain that the aircraft will provide a reliable stopgap measure as efforts continue to modernize the presidential fleet and ensure secure transportation for the commander-in-chief.
