Benin, Edo State – What began as a major infrastructure drive in Rivers, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom States is now spreading across more parts of the Niger Delta, as communities in Delta, Edo, Cross River, Ondo, Imo, and Abia States continue to benefit from an ambitious street lighting programme championed by the Minister of Regional Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh.

For many residents, the installation of modern street lights is doing more than simply illuminating roads at night. It is transforming communities, improving security, extending business hours, and creating a renewed sense of confidence among citizens.

The initiative, widely described as a “Street Light Revolution,” reflects the Minister’s commitment to addressing critical infrastructure needs while driving sustainable development across the region.

In several communities where darkness once limited movement and economic activities after sunset, the new lighting systems have opened up opportunities for traders, transport operators, and small business owners to operate safely into the evening hours.

Residents have also reported feeling more secure as well-lit streets help deter criminal activities and make public spaces safer for pedestrians and motorists alike.

Observers say the project is part of a broader vision by the Ministry of Regional Development to improve the quality of life in underserved communities while strengthening the foundation for economic growth.

Beyond enhancing security and convenience, the programme is helping to boost local commerce, attract investment, and improve connectivity within communities. It is also contributing to social inclusion by making public spaces more accessible and welcoming for residents.

As the initiative continues to reach more states across the Niger Delta, it stands as a visible reminder of government efforts to deliver meaningful development projects that directly impact people’s lives.

With a focus on innovation, strategic planning, and community-centered development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh remains committed to ensuring that more communities enjoy the benefits of modern infrastructure, brighter streets, and greater opportunities for sustainable growth and prosperity.
