The Bayelsa State Civil Service Commission, in collaboration with the Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered) (NIM), has organised a two-day capacity-building workshop aimed at strengthening work ethics, professionalism, and productivity among its staff.

The workshop, themed “Work Ethics and Attitudinal Change for Improved Productivity,” is holding at the Golden Tulip Hotel, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, and is designed to equip participants with the knowledge, skills, and values required for improved service delivery in line with modern public service standards.

According to the organisers, the training focuses on key workplace issues including ethics, discipline, integrity, accountability, commitment to duty, interpersonal relationships, and the development of positive attitudes that foster organisational efficiency. Participants are also being exposed to contemporary management practices and strategies for enhancing both personal effectiveness and institutional performance.

Speaking ahead of the workshop, the Chairman of the Bayelsa State Civil Service Commission, Mr. Buruboyefe Perekiye John, said the initiative reflects the Commission’s sustained commitment to capacity development and the promotion of a culture of excellence within the state civil service.

He noted that the effectiveness of any organisation depends largely on the quality and attitude of its workforce, stressing that productivity in the public sector can only improve when employees demonstrate professionalism, integrity, dedication, and a strong work ethic.

“The Commission recognises that beyond technical competence, the attitude and ethical conduct of employees play a critical role in achieving organisational goals,” Mr. John said. “This workshop is therefore designed to reawaken values such as commitment, responsibility, accountability, and service excellence among staff.”

He further explained that the partnership with the Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered)—Nigeria’s leading professional management body—demonstrates the Commission’s resolve to adopt best practices in human resource development and institutional strengthening.

The training is expected to feature seasoned management experts, leadership consultants, and resource persons from the institute, who will facilitate interactive sessions, presentations, and practical engagements tailored to the realities of public sector administration.

Participants will also gain deeper insights into ethical leadership, workplace behaviour, effective communication, teamwork, time management, conflict resolution, and strategies for fostering a result-oriented work environment.

In his remarks while declaring the workshop open, the Head of Service, Bayelsa State, Dr. Wisdom Ebiye Sawyer, emphasised the strategic importance of the Civil Service Commission in building a competent and disciplined workforce capable of driving sustainable development in the state.

Dr. Sawyer described the civil service as the engine room of government administration, noting that continuous training and reorientation are essential to equip public servants with the right values and competencies needed to meet the evolving demands of governance and service delivery.

He commended the initiative and encouraged participants to take full advantage of the training to improve their productivity and professional conduct in the discharge of their duties.

The Bayelsa State Civil Service Commission reaffirmed its commitment to continuous learning, professional development, and reforms aimed at building a responsive, efficient, and people-oriented civil service capable of supporting the developmental agenda of the Prosperity Administration led by Governor Senator Douye Diri.
