Veteran United States Congressman and outspoken critic of President Donald Trump, Al Green, has lost his Democratic primary runoff in Texas to fellow Representative Christian Menefee, bringing an end to Green’s more than two decades in Congress.
Menefee defeated Green in the closely watched race for Texas’ newly redrawn 18th Congressional District, a contest shaped largely by redistricting that placed the two Democrats in the same district.
Green, who represented Texas’ 9th Congressional District since 2005, became nationally known for his repeated efforts to impeach Trump and his vocal opposition to the president’s policies during both Trump administrations. He frequently challenged Trump publicly and drew national attention earlier this year following a protest during a presidential address.

The race highlighted a generational and political shift within Democratic politics in Houston, with 38-year-old Menefee campaigning on younger leadership and coalition-building, while Green leaned on his long congressional experience and record of activism.
Menefee’s victory effectively ends Green’s congressional tenure and positions the freshman lawmaker as the Democratic standard-bearer in the heavily Democratic district ahead of the general election. Despite the defeat, Green indicated he would continue advocating on issues he has long championed outside elected office.
The Texas runoff election was among several high-profile contests that underscored changing political dynamics across the state and the impact of recent redistricting efforts.
