The Bayelsa State Government has issued a strong warning against illegal dredging activities taking place in restricted areas across the state, particularly around Tombia Bridge along the Amassoma Road and the Swali axis.
In a special public announcement released by the Bayelsa State Ministry of Environment, the government expressed concern that despite an existing ban on dredging in environmentally sensitive and restricted locations, some individuals and operators have continued to carry out unlawful activities.

The Ministry directed that all dredging operations in the affected areas and around bridges across the state must stop immediately.
According to the statement, unauthorized dredging around bridges poses serious risks to public safety and the environment. The government warned that such activities can weaken bridge foundations, trigger erosion and land degradation, destroy aquatic ecosystems, and heighten the risk of structural collapse, thereby endangering lives and property.
The Ministry emphasized that the directive extends to all restricted zones across Bayelsa State and warned that violators would face severe consequences under the laws of the state.
Offenders, the statement noted, risk arrest, prosecution, confiscation of dredging equipment, and other legal penalties.
The Honourable Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Ebi Ben Ololo, reaffirmed the Bayelsa State Government’s commitment to safeguarding public infrastructure and protecting the environment.
He also urged residents to cooperate with authorities by complying with the directive and reporting any illegal dredging activities to relevant agencies.
“The Bayelsa State Government remains committed to protecting public infrastructure, preserving the environment, and ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all citizens,” the statement read.
The government reiterated its determination to enforce environmental regulations and curb activities capable of threatening ecological balance and public safety in the state.
