After Algeria Success, Renowned philanthropist and sports enthusiast, Kingsley Awodi, has applauded Nigeria’s para powerlifting team following their outstanding performance at the African Para Powerlifting Championship in Oran, Algeria.

Awodi praised the athletes for their determination, resilience and remarkable display of the Nigerian spirit throughout the competition, describing their achievements as a testament to hard work and dedication.

The sports supporter, who has consistently backed para sports development in Nigeria, recently sponsored the maiden Kingsley Awodi National Para Powerlifting Championship in Abuja. The competition was aimed at discovering emerging talents and preparing elite lifters for the continental championship in Algeria.

Speaking on the team’s arrival at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, Awodi expressed optimism about the future of Nigerian para powerlifting, insisting that greater success is possible with sustained support.

“There is no stopping this crop of para powerlifters if they continue to receive the right support. We know what they are capable of and we have seen what they have achieved over the years. The competition we organised before their trip to Algeria had a huge impact on their performance, and it shows that we need to continue doing more,” he said.

Awodi stressed that sports development should not rest solely on the shoulders of government, urging private individuals and corporate organisations to play a more active role in supporting athletes and sports programmes across the country.

“Government alone cannot do it. The private sector must continue to support sports development, and that is what I am trying to do. I hope more people will follow suit because together we are building something special, and I want to continue giving my support,” he added.

He also commended the leadership of the National Sports Commission, particularly Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director-General Hon. Bukola Olopade, for fostering an environment that encourages private participation in sports development.

According to Awodi, reforms and initiatives introduced by the commission have strengthened collaboration among stakeholders and contributed positively to the growth of Nigeria’s sports sector.

In a move to further motivate the athletes ahead of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Awodi announced cash rewards for medal winners. Gold medalists will receive ₦1.5 million each, silver medalists ₦1 million, while bronze medalists will be rewarded with ₦500,000.

“This is not just about financial rewards, but about recognising sacrifice, hard work and the courage to represent Nigeria with pride,” he stated.

Nigeria’s para powerlifting team delivered an impressive performance at the championship, securing 32 gold, 12 silver and five bronze medals to finish second overall behind Egypt, further reinforcing the country’s status as a dominant force in para sports across Africa.
