Diri honours mother’s enduring legacy at solemn memorial serviceBy Rhoda Godwin

Governor of Douye Diri, Senator Douye Diri, on Friday led an outpouring of tributes in honour of his late mother, Mrs. Rose Diri, as family members, political associates, traditional leaders and dignitaries gathered in Ayamasa, Ekeremor Local Government Area, for her 13th memorial service.

The solemn but colourful gathering drew prominent personalities from across Bayelsa and beyond, turning the quiet riverine community into a centre of remembrance, reflection and thanksgiving.

Speaking during the memorial service, Governor Diri described his late mother as a virtuous woman whose love, kindness and enduring values continued to inspire the family and all who encountered her during her lifetime.

According to a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, the governor reflected emotionally on the unique role mothers play in shaping families and society, noting that the memory of his mother has remained evergreen since her passing in 2013.

“Mothers occupy very special places in our hearts. We were indeed very close to our mother,” Diri said.

“We are only remembered by what we have done after our lives on earth. Although she died many years ago, Mama’s memories will remain evergreen in our hearts.

“As we gather here, let us take a moment to reflect on who we are. In all we do, let us try to touch the lives of others. She will forever be remembered for her good nature and enduring legacies.”

The governor noted that every May 15, he and his siblings usually gather quietly to honour their mother’s memory, but said this year’s remembrance took on a broader significance as people from different walks of life joined the family in celebrating her legacy.

He expressed appreciation to guests who attended the well-attended service, describing their presence as a testament to the impact and goodwill associated with the Diri family.

Among dignitaries present were the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Peter Akpe, and his wife, Dr. Favour Akpe; Senator Konbowei Benson; and member representing Yenagoa/Kolokuma/Opokuma Federal Constituency, Oforji Oboku.

Others included the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri; Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Abraham Ingobere; former deputy governor, Peremobowei Ebebi; and former APC governorship candidate, David Lyon.

Also at the service were former Director-General of the Department of State Services, Matthew Seiyefa; Bayelsa representative on the NDDC board, Deinyabofa Dimaro; former presidential adviser, Kingsley Kuku; the new Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 16, Abubakar Zubairu; and Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, Daniel Iyamah.

In a symbolic moment during the service, Governor Diri read the only lesson from the Book of 2 Timothy 4:6-8, drawing attention to the scripture’s message on faith, perseverance and legacy.

Delivering a brief exhortation titled, “Mama Rose Came, Saw and Conquered,” the Special Adviser to the Governor on Religious Matters, Rev. Godspower Asingba, urged people to live exemplary lives that would positively impact others and outlive them.

According to the cleric, the late Mrs. Diri left indelible footprints through her compassion and the values she instilled in her children.

“We are here to celebrate her legacies because one of her fruits happens to be the governor of Bayelsa State and is delivering genuine service to his people. So let your life be a blessing to others,” he said
