The President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, PhD, has expressed strong confidence in Team Nigeria as the national wrestling contingent departed Abuja for the 2026 African Wrestling Championships in Alexandria, Egypt.
The team left the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on Tuesday ahead of the continental showpiece scheduled to hold from April 27 to May 2, 2026. The championship will feature competitions across the U17, U20, and Senior categories, with Nigeria aiming to maintain its dominance on the African wrestling stage.
The Nigerian contingent is made up of 18 athletes—10 female wrestlers and 8 male wrestlers—who will compete across 18 weight categories. They are supported by coaches, referees, and officials, forming a strong delegation tasked with sustaining Nigeria’s reputation in African wrestling.
Bidding farewell to the athletes before their departure, Adeniyi, who also serves as the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, charged the team to uphold discipline, focus, and national pride throughout the competition.
He commended the athletes for their commitment during camping and preparation, describing their attitude as the foundation for success.
“I want to appreciate all of you for the discipline and dedication you exhibited during your stay in camp. That is the spirit you have to showcase in Egypt,” Adeniyi said.
He reminded the team of their status as reigning women’s champions on the continent, stressing the importance of sustaining Nigeria’s record in the sport.
“Heading into this championship, we are the current women champions, and we have to try our best to bring the title home for the 15th time,” he added.
The NWF President further urged the athletes to see themselves as ambassadors of the country, emphasizing the need to represent Nigeria with pride and professionalism.
“Continue to believe in yourselves and do your best, and maintain a high level of discipline to make the country proud,” he said. “We implore you to ensure that Nigeria’s flag is hoisted in Alexandria victoriously.”
Nigeria has historically dominated women’s wrestling in Africa, and the federation is hoping to extend that record with another strong showing in Egypt.
