In a major boost to Nigeria’s oil production and economic diversification drive, the Federal Government has inaugurated the EMEM Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel — a key asset developed by Oriental Energy Resources Limited (OERL) for the Okwok Field offshore Akwa Ibom State.
Speaking during the sail-away ceremony, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, said the project represents a crucial stride toward increasing Nigeria’s daily crude oil output while also strengthening the country’s revenue base.
“With EMEM FPSO, we are not just increasing barrels; we are also creating the revenue streams required to fund our national development agenda,” the Minister stated.
Senator Lokpobiri reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to transparency and merit-based approvals in the oil and gas sector, emphasizing that project endorsements are no longer influenced by personal relationships or political connections.
“Investors and operators do not need to know me personally before their applications are approved,” he said. “As long as you comply with the extant laws and regulations, your projects will receive timely consideration. For instance, this is my first time meeting the Chairman of Oriental Energy Resources Limited, yet the approval of this project was based solely on compliance and merit.”
In his remarks, OERL Chairman, Alhaji (Dr.) Mohammed Indimi, OFR, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government and regulatory bodies for fostering an enabling environment that encourages indigenous participation in the energy sector.
“In 2022, we made the ambitious decision to develop the Okwok Field entirely independently. The sail away of the EMEM FPSO is a critical milestone in the field development process,” Indimi said.
He further acknowledged the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senator Lokpobiri, and relevant agencies such as the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) for their commitment to local content development.
“The Minister didn’t have to know me or our company before providing all the necessary support we required. This shows the posture of this current administration, and I commend him for that,” Indimi added.
Senator Lokpobiri lauded Oriental Energy for its resilience, innovation, and contribution to national growth, describing the EMEM FPSO as a testament to the strength and capacity of Nigerian companies in driving industrial advancement.
The successful sail-away of the EMEM FPSO underscores Nigeria’s growing focus on indigenous investment in the upstream sector, a vital step toward achieving energy security and sustainable economic development.
