The Ebonyi State Government has charged newly admitted students of Blessed Martins College of Nursing Science and Blessed Martins International Institute of Health Science and Technology (BMIIST), Ohatekwe Amagu in Ikwo Local Government Area, to embrace discipline, hard work and professionalism as the foundation for academic excellence.
The Chief Judge of Ebonyi State, Justice Elvis Ngene, who represented Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru at the combined matriculation ceremony, gave the charge as the institutions formally admitted about 2,500 new students into their various academic programmes.
Justice Ngene reminded the matriculants that gaining admission into the institution was a rare privilege that must not be taken for granted, noting that many young people desire quality education but are unable to pursue it due to financial constraints.
He urged the students to make the best use of the opportunity provided by their parents and guardians, stressing that the decisions they make from their first day in school would determine the kind of future they build for themselves.
According to him, while some students would emerge as outstanding professionals and leaders, those who waste their time in school might later regret their actions.
The chief judge expressed confidence that among the matriculating students were future leaders, professionals and captains of industry who could make meaningful contributions to society if they remained focused on their studies.
He cited Governor Nwifuru as an example of resilience and determination, noting that the governor rose from humble beginnings through perseverance and hard work, demonstrating that anyone can achieve greatness regardless of background.
Justice Ngene also commended the management and staff of the institution for expanding its academic structure from one department to seven, expressing optimism that the institution would soon attain its vision of becoming a full-fledged university.
Earlier, the founder of the institution, Hon. Chinedu Ogha, said the Blessed Martins educational system comprises a daycare and primary school, a school of science and technology, and a college of nursing science, all of which have received full accreditation.
Ogha disclosed that the institution, which has operated for nine years, has produced graduates who are performing excellently in universities, teaching hospitals and other professional establishments across the country.
He further revealed that the institution now occupies nearly eight hectares of land and is equipped with modern facilities including an automated laboratory and a 350-bed hospital to enhance practical training for health-related programmes.
According to him, the institution plans to commence university admissions by September, as part of its long-term vision to expand academic opportunities and make education more accessible.
Also speaking, the Provost of BMIIST, Dr. Emmanuel Okoro, said the institute currently runs 11 programmes accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and other relevant professional regulatory bodies.
Similarly, the Acting Provost of the College of Nursing Science, Mrs. Abagha-Ugwu, reminded the matriculating students that nursing is not merely a profession but a calling that requires compassion, discipline and integrity.
She assured that the college is committed to producing competent, skilled and globally competitive nurses capable of meeting modern healthcare challenges.
The ceremony featured the 2nd matriculation of the College of Nursing Science and the 9th matriculation of the Blessed Martins International Institute of Health Science and Technology, attracting dignitaries, parents and students from different parts of the country.
