NESREA, stakeholders unite to tackle lead pollution in Ogijo
The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has participated in a multi-stakeholder engagement aimed at addressing concerns over lead pollution linked to industrial activities, particularly used lead-acid battery recycling in Ogijo, Ogun State.
The meeting, convened to find lasting solutions to environmental and public health risks in the community, brought together key government agencies, regulators, industry operators, community leaders and environmental experts.
Director General of NESREA, Prof. Innocent Barikor, was represented at the forum by the Director, South West Zone, Mr. Peniel Jack, who reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to enforcing environmental regulations and safeguarding public health. He stressed the importance of compliance by industries operating within the area, especially those involved in battery recycling, to prevent contamination of air, soil and water.
Also in attendance were the Honourable Commissioner for Environment in Ogun State, Mr. Ola Oresanya, and the Ologijo of Ogijo, Oba Kazeem Kashimawo Olaonipekun Gbadamosi, alongside other stakeholders. Participants highlighted the need for stronger monitoring, improved waste management practices and continuous community engagement.
Stakeholders unanimously emphasized sustained collaboration among government agencies, host communities and industry players to effectively mitigate environmental risks, ensure responsible industrial operations and promote sustainable development in Ogijo and its environs.
