The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ebonyi State Command, says the state recorded 15 road traffic crashes during the yuletide period from December 2025 to early January 2026.
Sector Commander, Daniel Nnamdi Asoanya, on Monday disclosed this in Abakaliki, noting that 109 persons were involved, out of which 35 sustained injuries, while one male adult died.
Asoanya attributed the crashes mainly to excessive speeding and dangerous driving, especially along roads undergoing construction.
“The offences responsible for most of the crashes are over-speeding and speed violations,” he said. “A lot of construction is ongoing on the Enugu–Abakaliki corridor, yet drivers ignore the signs and end up colliding or running into stationary objects.”
He said FRSC personnel had been deployed across critical junctions and highways in the state, with all six unit commands on 24-hour operations throughout the festive period.
“We shut down every other activity except operations. Our staff are out on strategic points where crashes are common,” Asoanya said. “So far, it has been good. We recorded only 15 crashes within the period.”
He described the Enugu–Abakaliki–Ogoja Expressway, which he called an international highway, as the most accident-prone route.
Asoanya appealed to motorists to obey speed limits, especially where roads are narrow or under construction, warning that speeding often renders drivers unable to control their vehicles.
“Once you are over-speeding, your driving becomes dangerous. At that point, the vehicle controls the driver, not the other way around,” he cautioned.
