Senator Godiya Akwashiki Dies at 52NASSARAWA EGGON, Nasarawa State — Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District under the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has died at the age of 52 after a protracted illness.

A family source confirmed the death to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Nassarawa Eggon, stating that the lawmaker passed away on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at a hospital in India, where he had been receiving treatment.

Describing his passing as a major loss to the district and the state, the source said Akwashiki’s leadership and commitment to development left an indelible mark on Nasarawa North.

“Since the history of Nasarawa North, Senator Akwashiki was the best senator the zone ever produced due to his purposeful leadership,” the source said. “His projects are in every nook and cranny of the constituency, and he was the only senator who re-contested and won a second term in the zone.”

Akwashiki was first elected to the Nigerian Senate in 2019 and was re-elected in 2023, making him one of the few lawmakers from the district to secure a second term. Before his election to the Senate, he served in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, where he rose to become Majority Leader and later Deputy Speaker.

Born on August 3, 1973, in Angba Iggah, Nassarawa Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Akwashiki was widely regarded as a grassroots politician with a strong focus on infrastructure, education, and community development.

His death has sent shockwaves through the political landscape of Nasarawa State, with colleagues, constituents, and party members mourning the loss of a lawmaker many described as dedicated, accessible, and impactful.
