KOROKOROSEI, Bayelsa State — The Senator representing Bayelsa Central Senatorial District, Rt. Hon. Konbowei Benson, OON, on Saturday hosted former Bayelsa governor-elect, Chief David Lyon, at his hometown, Korokorosei, in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, as both leaders jointly inaugurated Akpoundu Hotel.
The event marked the official opening of the hospitality facility located at Igaliwari compound, Korokorosei, built by an illustrious son of the community, Captain Opuofoni (Ph.D).
Senator Konbowei Benson and Chief David Lyon, both sons of the Olodiama Clan, described the project as a major milestone for the community. Speaking at the ceremony, Senator Konbowei commended Captain Opuofoni for siting the hotel in Korokorosei, noting that it addresses a long-standing accommodation challenge in the area.
According to the senator, Akpoundu Hotel will be of immense benefit to the community and visitors alike, including himself, especially when he returns home with large groups. He added that the project has enhanced the aesthetic appeal of Korokorosei and contributes meaningfully to its development.
Senator Konbowei used the occasion to urge other sons and daughters of Korokorosei to emulate the gesture by initiating development-oriented projects that would uplift the community.
In his remarks, former Bayelsa governor-elect, Chief David Lyon, said the hotel would serve not only Korokorosei but the entire Olodiama Clan. He noted that the facility would also accommodate visitors from neighbouring communities, including Olugbobiri, whenever he is in the area.
Chief Lyon praised Captain Opuofoni for investing in his hometown despite the greater commercial opportunities available in urban centres. He described Akpoundu Hotel as more than a physical structure, saying it is a strategic investment capable of transforming the economic fortunes of Korokorosei and surrounding communities.
He encouraged residents to support the hotel through regular patronage, stressing that it should be seen not merely as a personal project but as a community asset whose sustainability depends on collective support.
The inauguration attracted community leaders, political stakeholders, and residents who hailed the project as a step toward grassroots development and economic empowerment in Southern Ijaw.
