Christmas: Jonathan Urges Nigerians to Hold Firmly to Hope, Unity Amid Challenges
Former President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GEJ), has called on Nigerians to embrace hope, peace, and national unity as Christians across the country and around the world celebrate Christmas, describing the season as a powerful reminder that renewal is possible even in difficult times.
In his 2025 Christmas message to Nigerians and friends globally, the former president reflected on the spiritual significance of Christmas, noting that the birth of Jesus Christ reaffirmed God’s promise of redemption, hope, and peace for all humanity.
According to Jonathan, Christmas is more than a celebration; it is a season that calls believers to reflect deeply on the values of faith, humility, and selfless service, which he described as essential virtues for personal growth and national development.
“Christmas reminds us of the enduring light that shines even in times of uncertainty,” he said, stressing that the message of Christ’s birth continues to inspire resilience in moments of trial.
Speaking against the backdrop of Nigeria’s current economic and social realities, Jonathan acknowledged that many citizens are grappling with hardship. However, he urged Nigerians not to surrender to despair, emphasizing that the true essence of Christmas lies in hope and the conviction that better days lie ahead.
“As a nation, we reflect on these values at a moment when many Nigerians are facing economic and social challenges,” he stated. “Christmas calls us not to give in to hopelessness, but to hold firmly to the belief that renewal is possible.”
Drawing parallels between the biblical story of Christ’s birth and Nigeria’s journey, the former president noted that history has shown that hope is often strongest when it is tested. He expressed confidence that Nigeria’s collective faith, resilience, and determination would see the country overcome its present trials.
“Just as the birth of Christ brought a new dawn to a world in search of direction, our collective faith and resilience will guide us through this period and lead us to triumph,” Jonathan said.
Beyond hope, the former president emphasized the importance of peace and unity, describing them as indispensable pillars for Nigeria’s progress. He noted that the nation’s strength lies in its diversity and shared humanity, calling on citizens to relate with one another in compassion, mutual respect, and a strong sense of responsibility.
“This season calls us to peace and unity,” he said. “Nigeria’s strength lies in our willingness to live together with understanding and goodwill.”
Jonathan further urged Nigerians to use the Christmas period as a time to recommit to national cohesion and to actions that promote harmony across ethnic, religious, and political lines. He noted that small acts of kindness and understanding could have far-reaching effects on national stability and development.
As celebrations continue across the country, the former president concluded his message by extending warm Christmas wishes to Nigerians at home and in the diaspora, praying that the season would bring renewed hope, peace, and strength to the nation.
“Merry Christmas,” Jonathan said.
