The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Bayelsa State Chapter, has expressed profound shock and grief over the death of the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.
The association described Thursday as a dark and sorrowful day for Bayelsa State, following reports that the Deputy Governor collapsed in his office and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, where he was later pronounced dead.
SWAN Bayelsa stated that it is still struggling to come to terms with the painful loss of a hardworking, dutiful, and dedicated public servant whose contributions to the state remain invaluable.
In a statement jointly signed by the Chairman, Mrs. Timinepre Ohia, and the Secretary, Mr. Patrick Ndubuisi, the association described the death as deeply regrettable, noting that his passing has created a significant vacuum that will be difficult to fill.
The statement recalled the strong synergy and cordial working relationship between the late Deputy Governor, Governor Douye Diri, and the Commissioner for Sports Development, which played a key role in the remarkable growth of sports in the state and the numerous laurels won at both national and international competitions.
SWAN further acknowledged that Senator Ewhrudjakpo’s passion for sports and his active involvement in sporting affairs greatly contributed to the advancement of sports journalism in Bayelsa State, positioning the association on a stronger footing in recent years.
The association extended its heartfelt condolences to his wife, children, and the entire family, urging them to remain steadfast in this period of mourning and to draw comfort from the belief that the late Deputy Governor, renowned for his compassion and deep Christian faith, has gone to be with the Lord.
