Bayelsa State Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Daniel Igali, has reaffirmed the state’s full readiness to host what he described as “the best-ever National Sports Festival,” as preparations intensify toward the 2028 edition.
Speaking during a world press conference on Tuesday at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa, Igali announced that a recent assessment tour by a national inspection team found Bayelsa fit and capable of hosting the nation’s biggest sporting event. He noted that the festival would not only elevate the state’s sporting profile but also showcase Bayelsa’s rich cultural heritage to the entire country.
The Commissioner outlined key ongoing projects, including the construction of a new stadium at Igbogene and plans for a 5,000-seater stadium in Sampou. He further disclosed that the National Sports Commission has pledged to build an Olympic-size 50-metre swimming pool in the state, with construction set to begin once suitable land is provided.
Earlier, the Bayelsa State Director of Sports, Mr. Andrew Aye, described the state’s bid to host the 2028 National Sports Festival as “a new dawn” for Bayelsa. He commended the Prosperity Administration for taking the bold step, assuring that the government is committed to providing all necessary structures and logistics required for a successful hosting.
Aye emphasized that hosting the prestigious festival would create thousands of jobs and open new opportunities across the state. He added that the event would inspire children and young athletes in Bayelsa, giving them the platform to pursue excellence and become national champions.
With construction works underway and government agencies aligning their efforts, Bayelsa State appears poised to deliver an unforgettable National Sports Festival in 2028—one that promises to drive sports development, youth empowerment, and cultural promotion for years to come.
