Infantino under fire for alleged breach of FIFA’s political neutrality rule

FIFA President Gianni Infantino is facing backlash after he was accused of breaching the football body’s statutes by publicly appearing to endorse the political agenda of U.S. President Donald Trump.

The controversy erupted after Infantino was seen at a political event in the United States where he praised Trump’s “leadership vision” and expressed optimism about future collaborations involving sports and infrastructure. Critics argue that such comments amount to political endorsement, which is explicitly prohibited under FIFA’s code of conduct and statutes designed to maintain neutrality.

According to Article 4 of the FIFA Statutes, the organization and its officials must remain politically neutral and refrain from actions that could be interpreted as supporting or opposing any political figure or ideology.

Several football governance experts and transparency advocates have called for an internal ethics investigation, describing Infantino’s conduct as a “clear violation” of FIFA’s principles. One ethics watchdog group, Play Fair Global, stated that “Infantino’s actions undermine FIFA’s credibility and independence, especially at a time when football’s governance needs to be beyond reproach.”

FIFA has yet to issue an official statement addressing the allegations. However, sources within the governing body reportedly said the matter “is being reviewed.”

This is not the first time Infantino has faced scrutiny for his close ties to political leaders. In 2020, he drew criticism for appearing alongside controversial figures during the World Cup bidding process.

As calls for accountability grow, analysts warn that the incident could further damage FIFA’s image and test its commitment to political neutrality ahead of upcoming global tournaments.
