Fawlty Towers Star Prunella Scales Dies Peacefully at 93

Veteran British actress Prunella Scales, best known for her iconic role as Sybil Fawlty in the classic sitcom Fawlty Towers, has died at the age of 93.

Her family announced that she passed away peacefully at her home in London on October 27, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. In a statement, her sons, Samuel and Joseph West, described her as “a loving mother, grandmother and wife who brought laughter and light to millions.”

Scales had been battling vascular dementia for more than a decade. Despite the illness, she continued to appear in public alongside her husband, actor Timothy West, notably in the Channel 4 documentary series Great Canal Journeys, where the couple shared their love of boating and reflected on her health challenges.

Born in Surrey in 1932, Scales’ acting career spanned over six decades, featuring acclaimed performances in television, theatre, and film. However, it was her portrayal of the sharp-tongued Sybil Fawlty in Fawlty Towers (1975–1979) that made her a household name.

Tributes have poured in from colleagues and fans across the world. Fawlty Towers co-star John Cleese praised her as “a brilliant comic actress and a joy to work with.”

Scales is survived by her husband, two sons, and several grandchildren. Her family said she had spent her final days “in good spirits, revisiting her favorite comedies and surrounded by love.”

Her passing marks the end of an era for British television comedy. (250 words)
