Court Remands Kano Man for Allegedly Killing Wife Over Refusal to Prepare Kuli-Kuli

A Kano State High Court sitting on Miller Road has ordered the remand of one Idris Kurma in a correctional facility for allegedly killing his wife after she refused to prepare kuli-kuli (peanut cake).

The tragic incident, which occurred in the Unguwar Rimi area of Kano metropolis, has sparked outrage among residents, who described the act as “barbaric and inhuman.”

According to the prosecution, Kurma was arrested by operatives of the Kano State Police Command following reports that he fatally attacked his wife during a domestic dispute. The altercation was said to have started when the deceased declined his request to prepare kuli-kuli, leading to a heated argument that turned violent.

The police prosecutor informed the court that the accused inflicted fatal injuries on his wife, who was later confirmed dead at a nearby hospital. He was subsequently charged with culpable homicide, contrary to Section 221 of the Penal Code Law.

During Tuesday’s proceedings, the prosecution counsel urged the court to remand the accused in custody pending legal advice from the Kano State Ministry of Justice.

Presiding Judge, Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu, granted the request and ordered that the accused be remanded at the Kano Correctional Centre. She adjourned the case to December 10, 2025, for mention.

Meanwhile, the police have assured the public of a thorough investigation into the matter, emphasizing their commitment to ensuring justice for the deceased.

The late woman, identified by neighbors as Rukayya Idris, was described as a peaceful and hardworking mother of two. Community members have called for justice and stronger measures to curb rising cases of domestic violence in the state.

Human rights groups, including the Kano Women Development Initiative, have condemned the killing, urging authorities to ensure that the suspect faces the full weight of the law.

“This is a tragic reminder of how deep-seated anger and disregard for human life can destroy families. We call for justice for Rukayya and for the protection of women from gender-based violence,” the group said in a statement.
