Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has announced plans by his administration to immortalise the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), Professor Nnenna Oti, in recognition of her integrity, courage, and steadfastness during the 2023 general elections.
Governor Otti made the announcement at the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba, during a grand civic reception organised in his honour by the Old Bende Progressive Union, which comprises the eight Local Government Areas of Old Bende, including the Edda community in Ebonyi State. Professor Nnenna Oti was also specially honoured at the event.
Describing Professor Oti as “a woman of uncommon integrity and credibility,” Governor Otti commended her for standing firm in the face of pressure during the 2023 governorship election, adding that her principled stance earned her national respect and admiration.
“Abia people have many awards to give her, and at the appropriate time, we will immortalise her. She has set a new template for Nigeria. Whenever integrity and credibility are mentioned, all eyes turn to her. She may not have taken money, but she took something greater — honour,” Governor Otti stated.
The governor further urged public officers across Nigeria to emulate Professor Oti’s example by standing for truth, fairness, and justice, irrespective of personal or political interests.
Turning to the 2027 elections, Governor Otti cautioned political actors against early politicking, insisting that the future belongs to God.
“The only comment I will make about 2027 is that it is in God’s hands. Those who boast about 2027 should stop. You may not even be here then. If you want to play God, I will leave you in the hands of God,” he warned.
Governor Otti reaffirmed that his administration’s focus remains on delivering quality governance and fulfilling the mandate given to him by the people of Abia State.
“Let us not distract ourselves. We have a lot of work to do. Let us focus on the mandate entrusted to us. At the appropriate time, the people will decide who leads them,” he emphasized.
Earlier in his address, the Chairman of the Old Bende Progressive Union and retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Chief Azubuike Udah, described the occasion as a collective endorsement of Governor Otti’s leadership and achievements since assuming office.
Chief Udah praised the governor’s transformational impact across all sectors of the Abia economy, noting that the people of Old Bende — known for their industry, unity, and support for worthy causes — have passed a unanimous vote of confidence on his administration.
The colourful ceremony was attended by dignitaries from all walks of life, including the State Deputy Governor, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu (FNSE); Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa; federal and state lawmakers; traditional rulers; captains of industry; and other prominent guests.
