Tension gripped the National Assembly on Tuesday following revelations that members of the federal legislature have received threats from unidentified individuals threatening to bomb the complex in Abuja.
The disclosure came during a session of a key House of Representatives Committee, where the Chairman expressed deep concern over the growing security threats targeted at lawmakers and the National Assembly as an institution.
Although the identity of the committee chairman was not immediately disclosed, he confirmed that several legislators had received disturbing messages warning of an imminent attack on the legislative complex.
“We are taking these threats seriously. The safety of lawmakers, staff, and everyone who works within the National Assembly is a matter of national importance,” the lawmaker stated, calling for immediate reinforcement of security around the premises.
He further urged security agencies to investigate the source of the threats and ensure that those behind the messages are brought to justice.
The revelation has sparked anxiety within the legislative community, with some lawmakers reportedly calling for heightened security checks and restricted access to the complex.
As of press time, security operatives were seen conducting more thorough screenings at entry points, while vehicles were subjected to extended searches before being allowed into the premises.
The National Assembly, which houses both the Senate and the House of Representatives, has previously faced security alerts, but this latest threat is said to be among the most serious in recent years.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident, but sources say security agencies have been placed on high alert to forestall any possible attack.
