Popular Nigerian social media critic, Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, has vowed to revolutionize the gadget market in Nigeria by drastically reducing prices when he returns to the country.
In a viral video shared online, the outspoken activist accused Nigerian gadget sellers of exploiting consumers with excessive mark-ups, claiming that the price difference between gadgets sold abroad and those in Nigeria is “outrageously high.”
“A lot of una wey dey for gadget business make una just dey pray, because anything wey make me touch that country, a lot of things go cheap. Una don milk Nigerians too much,” he said. “When I hear the price of original power banks for here, I shake my head. Power bank of ₦36,000, you go see am here for ₦6,000 or ₦7,000. Original charger of ₦15,000 for Nigeria na ₦1,200 or ₦1,300 here.”
VeryDarkMan, who is currently in China, disclosed that he plans to partner with manufacturers to import quality gadgets directly, thereby cutting off middlemen and reducing inflated costs. He also hinted at establishing a major gadget hub in Eastern Nigeria to ensure fair competition and affordability.
His comments have sparked reactions from Nigerians, with many applauding his intention to challenge exploitative pricing, while others doubt the feasibility of his plan given import duties, shipping costs, and currency instability.
If successful, VeryDarkMan’s move could significantly reshape Nigeria’s consumer electronics market and offer much-needed relief to buyers.
