Bayelsa Govt Urges Community Leaders to Prioritize Peace, Clarifies Stand on Biseni and Swali Chieftaincy DisputesThe Bayelsa State Government has called on traditional rulers and community leaders across the state to make necessary sacrifices that will promote peace, unity, and development in their respective domains.

Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, made the appeal during separate meetings with chiefs and stakeholders of Biseni Clan and Swali Community, both in Yenagoa Local Government Area.

In a statement issued over the weekend by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Doubara Atasi, Senator Ewhrudjakpo identified lack of love, unforgiving attitudes, and selfish interests as major causes of communal crises in several Bayelsa communities.

He maintained that peace and prosperity flourish where leaders rule with love and followers respect constituted authority. He urged the Biseni people to prioritize the collective good of the clan above personal or factional interests.

The Deputy Governor reaffirmed that the state government’s earlier position of not recognizing any individual as Clan Head of Biseni remains valid, as the matter is still before the Court of Appeal. He directed the Chief Wariebi Williams-led Biseni Traditional Council of Chiefs to continue managing the affairs of the clan pending the outcome of the case.

Senator Ewhrudjakpo cautioned against any attempt by individuals to install themselves as paramount rulers, warning that such actions could threaten peace and order in the area.

“The government will not condone any illegality. While the case is still before the court, no one is recognized as the paramount ruler of Biseni. Everyone must allow due process to take its course,” he stated.

Similarly, in the case of Swali Community, the Deputy Governor instructed the existing seven chiefs to select among themselves an interim chairman to oversee affairs following the suspension—not removal—of their paramount ruler. He also warned against conducting any new Ebeniken election while the investigation continues.

Those who spoke at the meetings, including Assembly Member Chief Ayibanengiyefa Egba and other community leaders, commended the government for its peace-driven approach and reaffirmed their support for its mediation efforts.
