May Agbamuche-Mbu has emerged as the Acting Chairperson of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following the temporary exit of Professor Mahmood Yakubu from office.
Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu, the National Commissioner representing Delta, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom states, will oversee the affairs of the Commission pending further directives from the Presidency or the conclusion of any ongoing administrative processes concerning Professor Yakubu’s tenure.
Her appointment, which took immediate effect, was announced at the INEC headquarters in Abuja, where she formally assumed office and pledged to sustain the Commission’s commitment to credible, transparent, and inclusive electoral processes.

Speaking shortly after taking over, Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in her, assuring Nigerians that INEC would remain independent and uphold the principles of fairness and neutrality. “We will continue to strengthen public trust in the electoral process and ensure that ongoing reforms are not disrupted,” she stated.
Until her elevation, Agbamuche-Mbu had served as one of the longest-serving National Commissioners in INEC, known for her strong stance on gender inclusion, electoral law reforms, and administrative transparency. A seasoned lawyer and former publisher, she has been part of several committees within the Commission responsible for legal, political party, and women’s participation affairs.
Her assumption of office comes at a critical time as INEC prepares for several off-cycle governorship elections and begins early planning for the 2027 general elections. Observers believe her experience within the Commission’s leadership structure will ensure continuity and stability in its operations.
Meanwhile, reactions have begun to trail the development, with political analysts describing it as a strategic move to maintain order within INEC’s hierarchy. Civil society groups have also urged the Acting Chair to prioritize internal reforms, staff welfare, and technology-driven electoral management.

Her appointment marks a historic moment, making her one of the few women ever to lead Nigeria’s electoral body, even in an acting capacity.
