NAWOJ Bayelsa Advocates Empowerment, Safety for Women JournalistsBy Rhoda Godwin, Yenagoa

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Bayelsa State Chapter, has called for increased empowerment, safety, and professional development for women journalists in the media industry.

The call was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of a two-day event organised by NAWOJ to commemorate International Women’s Day in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

The event featured a road walk and a symposium held on Thursday at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Press Centre, Azikoro Road, Ekeki, with the theme “Give to Gain: Empowering Women Journalists for Impact.”

In the communiqué signed by Chairman of the Drafting Committee, Ebinimi Zitimiyola; Secretary, Donghan Barbara Omusuku; and member, Peregborobofa Angese-Engonanabo, the association stressed the need for stronger collaboration with individuals and organisations working to empower women in journalism.

NAWOJ appreciated media owners and employers for providing platforms that enable women journalists to practice their profession and earn a decent living.

The association, however, noted that women journalists continue to face challenges such as bias, deprivation, abuse, and safety concerns both in the workplace and in the course of their duties.

It emphasised that with adequate support, protection, and empowerment, women journalists would be able to thrive and contribute meaningfully to the development of the media industry.

NAWOJ also highlighted the importance of promoting women journalists into leadership positions, noting that such opportunities would help shape narratives and drive positive change in society.

The association further encouraged women journalists to prioritise professional development by participating in training workshops, seminars, and conferences, particularly in emerging areas of journalism.

It urged practitioners to develop multimedia skills and embrace technology and innovation in order to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving digital media landscape.

The communiqué also underscored the importance of networking and mentorship in helping women journalists navigate challenges within the profession.

NAWOJ reiterated its commitment to promoting gender equality in the media industry and pledged to continue raising awareness on issues affecting women journalists through public engagements, special media coverage, and enlightenment campaigns.

The association also called on women journalists to support one another through solidarity and collective action to drive meaningful change within the profession.

In addition, journalists were advised to pay attention to their mental health, manage work-related stress effectively, and seek professional help when necessary.

NAWOJ was commended for organising the symposium and training session as part of activities marking International Women’s Day.

The association also received appreciation for honouring Lilian Erefagha, a veteran journalist who served with the state-owned Niger Delta Television (NDTV), in recognition of her contributions to journalism.

The communiqué was issued on March 13, 2026, at the end of the two-day event in Yenagoa.
