The Federated Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bayelsa State Council, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of one of its former members, Comrade Isaac Ombe, who died in a fatal road accident along the Toru-Orua axis of the Sagbama/Ekeremor Road.
The accident, which occurred while an 18-seater bus conveying passengers to the burial ceremony of the late Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, crashed, claimed several lives, including that of the seasoned journalist.
In a statement issued on behalf of the chapel, the Chairman, Mr. Tife Owolabi, and the Secretary Emem Idio described Ombe’s death as shocking and devastating, noting that the journalism family in Bayelsa has lost a committed professional and dependable colleague.
He said Comrade Ombe was a thoroughbred journalist who served the profession with integrity, dedication, and passion for truth, adding that his contributions to journalism and the chapel would be deeply missed.
According to the statement, the late Ombe worked with several reputable media organizations, including The Nation, National Mirror, The Comet, News Express, and The Verbatim. He also served as an executive member of the Federated Correspondents Chapel before leaving active journalism to take up an appointment at the Niger Delta Basin Development Authority (NDBDA).
“The late Isaac Ombe was known for his professionalism, strong work ethic, and warm camaraderie with colleagues. His legacy will remain indelible in the hearts of those who worked with him,” the statement read.
Mr. Owolabi extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, members of the NUJ Bayelsa State Council, and the entire journalism community, praying God to grant the family the strength and grace to bear the irreparable loss.
He also prayed for the peaceful repose of Ombe’s soul and those of other victims who lost their lives in the tragic accident.
The chapel reaffirmed its solidarity with the bereaved family and urged authorities to intensify efforts toward improving road safety across the state to prevent similar tragedies.
Comrade Isaac Ombe was described as a journalist whose life and service exemplified commitment to truth and public service.
