Gov Okpebholo Calls for Increased Support for Nigerian Armed ForcesEdo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has called for greater support for the Nigerian Armed Forces in recognition of their sacrifices in safeguarding the unity and territorial integrity of the nation.

The governor made the call while speaking with journalists at the Museum Grounds, Oba Ovonramwen Square, Benin City, the venue of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration, an annual event held to honour fallen heroes.

According to Governor Okpebholo, the occasion was an opportunity to remember and appreciate the men and women who laid down their lives for the continuous existence of Nigeria. He prayed for the repose of their souls and for God to grant their families the strength to bear the loss.

He also urged personnel still in active service to remain committed and dedicated to the service of the nation, expressing confidence that God would continue to preserve Nigeria and honour both the living and the departed who have made great sacrifices to keep the country united.

Speaking at the event, the State Coordinator of the Military Widows Association, Umar Sheriffat, appealed to government at all levels to sustain support for widows of fallen heroes who paid the supreme price in the line of duty. She called on relevant authorities to recognise and empower the widows to enable them adequately cater for the children left behind.

Also, a retired Major of the Nigerian Army, Joe Koma, appealed for improved welfare for military retirees, noting that such support would motivate those currently in active service.

He acknowledged that pensions are being paid regularly but called for an increase and improved care for retirees, stressing that veterans who sacrificed their lives for the nation deserve better welfare and attention.
