AIG Adenola, CP Iyamah Dismantle Illegal Checkpoints on East–West Road
The Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 16 Headquarters, Yenagoa, AIG Johnson Oluwole Adenola, psc, alongside the Commissioner of Police, Bayelsa State Command, CP Iyamah Daniel Edebor, psc, IICFIP, foosi, has carried out an on-the-spot assessment of police checkpoints along the East–West Road in Bayelsa State.
The inspection exercise, aimed at strengthening professionalism and restoring public confidence in policing, saw the senior officers dismantling illegal roadblocks mounted by some operatives along the busy highway. The AIG and the Commissioner warned officers against extortion, harassment and all forms of misconduct towards members of the public, particularly motorists and commuters who ply the expressway daily.
Addressing officers during the exercise, AIG Adenola emphasized the need for strict adherence to the rules of engagement and the Nigeria Police Force code of conduct. He reminded personnel that checkpoints are meant to enhance public safety and crime prevention, not to inconvenience or exploit citizens.
Similarly, CP Iyamah Daniel Edebor charged officers to remain professional, courteous and lawful in the discharge of their duties. He stressed that any act capable of tarnishing the image of the Force would not be tolerated.
CP Iyamah further disclosed that the monitoring exercise would become routine, as part of measures to checkmate the conduct of officers on highways and across the state. According to him, the Command is committed to ensuring that policing in Bayelsa remains people-friendly, transparent and accountable.
Motorists and residents who witnessed the exercise commended the leadership of the Police for taking proactive steps to curb excesses and improve security operations along the East–West Road.
The exercise forms part of ongoing efforts by the Nigeria Police Force to sanitize its operations, strengthen discipline among officers and promote a safer environment for all road users in Bayelsa State.
