Okene, Kogi State — The Kogi State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of a middle-aged man, Abdul-Kadir Nagazi, following allegations that he was poisoned under circumstances linked to a long-running marital dispute.
According to preliminary accounts from community sources, the deceased had been married to his first wife, identified as Favor Qdoba, for about nine years without children. The situation reportedly changed when Nagazi contracted a second marriage and welcomed a newborn with his new wife less than two months ago.
Residents say tensions escalated shortly after the birth.
On the night before his death, Nagazi was allegedly invited by his first wife to spend the night with her. By morning, he was rushed to a hospital in Okene, where he was confirmed dead.
Medical and police sources familiar with the case say initial findings point to possible poisoning, allegedly administered through food and injections. However, authorities caution that a definitive cause of death will only be established after a full forensic examination.
In a development that has deepened public concern, Favor Odoba—said to be the daughter of a retired police officer—has reportedly gone missing since the incident. Police say efforts are ongoing to locate her and to gather statements from all relevant parties.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through Okene, reopening difficult conversations about polygamy, infertility, emotional trauma, and unresolved marital conflicts. Community leaders and residents have called for calm, urging the public to avoid speculation while investigations continue.
“This is a painful reminder of how unresolved domestic tensions can spiral into irreversible tragedy,” a local elder said. “We must strengthen dialogue, counseling, and support systems for families under strain.”
The Kogi State Police Command has assured the public that it will pursue the case diligently and bring anyone found culpable to justice. As the investigation unfolds, authorities have appealed to anyone with credible information to come forward.
