A routine SIM card purchase has turned into a frightening ordeal for a family after operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) reportedly arrested a man in Ekiti State, weeks after his daughter bought the line for him in Lagos.
According to the daughter, who narrated the incident, her father had visited her in Lagos when she decided to get him a new SIM card for easier communication. However, only a few weeks later, DSS personnel allegedly traced and picked him up at his residence in Ekiti.
She stated that the security operatives gave no clear explanation for the arrest, only hinting that the issue was connected to the newly purchased SIM card. Efforts by the family to get additional details reportedly yielded no answers, leaving them distressed and confused about the real cause of the operation.
The incident has triggered conversations online about the need for caution in registering or purchasing SIM cards for others, especially as authorities continue to tighten surveillance and security measures nationwide.
Telecommunications regulations in Nigeria require that SIM cards be properly registered with valid identification, and security agencies often rely on subscriber data for investigations. However, concerns have been raised in recent years about mistaken identity, data misuse, and arrests without adequate explanation.
As the family continues to seek clarity on the situation, the incident serves as a reminder for Nigerians to exercise caution, ensure accurate registration details, and remain vigilant when acquiring SIM cards during this period of heightened security monitoring.
