The Chairman of the Organising Committee, Hon. Barr. Uroh Kiani, has formally announced the commencement of activities marking the 50th Anniversary of Chief (Ambassador) Ogunu Miebi Sampson’s extraordinary contribution to grassroots sports development in Nigeria.
Speaking during a press briefing held at the NUJ Press Centre, Azikoro Road, Ekeki, Yenagoa, Hon. Kiani said the one-week celebration is designed to honour half a century of dedicated youth mentorship, talent discovery and community sports advancement championed by Chief Sampson.
According to him, Ambassador Sampson has, over the past five decades, trained, guided and supported more than 100 young athletes in football, tennis and athletics, making significant impact in youth empowerment across Nigeria.
In his remarks, Chief Ogunu Miebi Sampson expressed gratitude to God and to communities, partners and sporting institutions that have supported his long journey in sports development. He emphasized that the celebration symbolises a renewed commitment to inspiring younger athletes and giving them platforms to succeed.
The week-long programme is scheduled from Monday 8th December to Sunday, featuring:
• Monday: Road Walk and Health Awareness from Ekeki Park to the Sports Complex
• Tuesday: Novelty Games featuring football clubs and local teams
• Wednesday: Friendly Sports Exhibition like table tennis and etc
• Thursday: Anniversary Lecture and Recognition of Stakeholders
• Friday: Special Appreciation Ceremony
Organisers include Samkay, Waves, and Glory Fm Group.
Distinguished personalities expected at the celebration are President Ahmed Tinubu, former President Goodluck Jonathan, Bayelsa State Governor Senator Douye Diri, Prof. Nimibofa Ayawei, SSG , Rt. Hon. Ingobere Abraham, Bayelsa speaker among others.
Commending the honouree, Comrade Loveday Herbert praised Chief Sampson for dedicating his life to sports training, saying his efforts have strengthened talent development across Bayelsa and Nigeria.
The organisers stressed that grassroots sports is an important instrument for peacebuilding, youth engagement, community growth and national unity, adding that Chief Sampson’s lifelong dedication is a clear example of how sports can transform young lives.
The Golden Anniversary celebration continues throughout the week in Yenagoa.
