Cyclist Edidiong Etefia Champions Climate Action on Kano Visit

The Kano State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change on Friday received environmental advocate Edidiong Etefia, who is currently on an inspiring nationwide cycling tour to raise awareness on climate action, environmental restoration, and the urgent need for collective responsibility in safeguarding the planet.

Etefia, who arrived in Kano as part of his cross-country journey, was warmly welcomed by the Honourable Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahir M. Hashim. His visit, officials said, reinforces the growing momentum around citizen-led environmental initiatives across Nigeria.

Dr. Hashim praised Etefia’s resilience and commitment, describing his mission as a powerful reminder that environmental protection goes beyond government policies and must be embraced by all citizens. “Protecting our planet is a shared responsibility,” the Commissioner stated. “While the Government is committed to policies and programmes such as the 5-Million Tree Planting Initiative, it is the collective effort of citizens, communities, civil society, and the private sector that turns action into lasting impact.”

He noted that Etefia’s journey reflects the spirit of environmental stewardship the state hopes to inspire among young people and communities. According to him, the advocate’s tour aligns with Kano’s long-term climate adaptation strategies, which include tree planting, ecosystem restoration, pollution control, and sustainable urban planning.

Etefia, who has been cycling from state to state engaging institutions and communities, shared his message of urgency on the need to restore degraded landscapes and nurture greener cities. He expressed appreciation for the Ministry’s support, encouraging Nigerians to take simple but sustained actions such as planting trees, reducing waste, and participating in environmental campaigns.

Dr. Hashim called on residents of Kano and Nigerians at large to draw inspiration from Etefia’s dedication. “His message is clear — we must all work together to restore degraded landscapes, safeguard our ecosystems, and build a greener future for Kano and Nigeria,” he said.

The Commissioner urged communities to intensify tree planting efforts, protect natural resources, and continue inspiring others to take environmental action “one step and one seedling at a time.”

Etefia’s visit marks another milestone in his awareness tour, which continues to attract national attention as a symbol of youth-driven climate activism and community engagement.
