Corps Member Donates 100 Desks to Government Secondary School Ovom, Yenagoa

A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member serving in Bayelsa State, Blessing Temitope, has donated one hundred (100) desks to Government Secondary School, Ovom, in Yenagoa, bringing relief to students who have struggled with inadequate classroom furniture for years.

The donation, which forms part of her NYSC Community Development Service (CDS) project, was formally handed over to the school management during a brief ceremony on Wednesday. Temitope said the gesture was motivated by her desire to create a better learning environment for students and contribute meaningfully to the community that has hosted her during her service year.

According to her, the project was inspired by her observations during her early days at the school, where many students either shared seats or stood throughout lessons due to the shortage of desks. She expressed hope that the intervention would enhance comfort, concentration, and academic performance.

“I wanted to do something that would make a lasting impact. Seeing students struggle to learn without proper seating broke my heart, and I knew I had to act,” she said.

Principal of the school, Mr. Daniel Ebi, praised the corps member for her selflessness and initiative, describing the donation as a significant boost to teaching and learning. He noted that the school had battled with inadequate furniture for several academic sessions, adding that the new desks would greatly reduce overcrowding in classrooms.

Officials of the NYSC Bayelsa State also commended Temitope, stating that her project aligned with the scheme’s goal of fostering community development and encouraging young Nigerians to give back to society.

Parents, students, and community leaders who attended the event expressed gratitude for the intervention, saying it would help restore dignity and improve academic engagement among learners.
