Oyo Enforces Ban on Walkway Trading, Issues Fresh Warning

The Oyo State Government has intensified its campaign against the unlawful occupation of pedestrian walkways and roadside corridors by traders, artisans, motor dealers, and other informal vendors across major urban centres in the state. The government issued a firm directive on Thursday ordering all such individuals to vacate these areas immediately or face stringent penalties.

The warning, delivered by the Chairman of the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA), Major Adesagba Adekoya (Rtd), came during a media briefing at the agency’s headquarters in Ibadan. Adekoya expressed deep concern over the growing trend of traders converting designated pedestrian walkways into makeshift shops and display stands, describing the practice as not only illegal but also hazardous to public safety and order.

According to a statement e-signed by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the OYRTMA Chairman emphasised that the activities of roadside traders significantly impede pedestrian movement, divert traffic flow, and create situations that often result in near-accidents. He added that the obstructions cause major inconvenience for road users, particularly during peak traffic periods, and contribute to the persistent congestion witnessed in parts of Ibadan.

Adekoya identified several hotspot locations where walkway encroachment has become rampant, including the University of Ibadan (U.I.) axis, Samonda, Mokola, Sango, Orogun, and other adjoining areas. He noted that despite continuous warnings and previous enforcement actions, many traders persist in the illegal occupation of these vital public spaces.

With the festive season approaching—a period known for increased human and vehicular movement—Adekoya stressed that the government would no longer tolerate activities that compromise road safety and public convenience. He urged traders to relocate immediately to designated markets provided by the state and local governments. Non-compliance, he warned, would attract penalties such as monetary fines, confiscation of wares, and possible court prosecution.

The Oyo State Government, through the Information Commissioner, commended OYRTMA for its sustained efforts to restore sanity and improve orderliness on major roads. Oyelade reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upgrading market infrastructure, improving transportation systems, and ensuring safe and efficient mobility for residents.

He added that the enforcement drive aligns with the broader agenda of Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration to modernize urban spaces, protect public walkways, and enhance the overall quality of life or citizens.
